Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) has been considered the top of its class as far as EV vehicles are concerned but an automobile company known as Rimac Automobili is looking to dethrone Tesla.
Rimac is a Croatian company that revealed an impressive concept model known as Concept_One in 2015 at the Formula E race in Miami, Florida. Tesla has been priding itself of the “ludicrous” mode which puts out impressive acceleration. One might, therefore, think that the Tesla model S might be the fastest electric car but the Concept_One begs to differ.
The 2016 model of the Concept_One has a top speed of 190 mph and can achieve 0 to 60 mph in just 2.6 seconds. The 2016 version of the electric car can achieve a top speed of 220 mph, impressive but not very practical. Such performance numbers will set back anyone looking to purchase one by almost $1 million.
A team from Archie Hamilton Racing decided to do a performance comparison between the Concept_One, a Ferrari LaFerrari, and a Tesla Model S P90D featuring the Ludicrous mode. The objective of the team was to see how the Rimac vehicle would fair against the other two. The Concept_One surprisingly outperformed both competitors. A video of the race shows the Concept_One getting off the line quicker than the Model S. The second part of the video showcases the car accelerating faster than the LaFerrari.
The secret behind the success of the vehicle is a combination of various factors including four motors that produce 1,600 Nm and slightly more than 1,000 horsepower, more ludicrous than Tesla’s Ludicrous. It also features an independent cooling system with numerous other smaller subsystems. The company has pulled all stops to make sure that performance is maximized for the racing track.
Every motor in the car is connected to an independent gearbox. Each of the rear wheels has a two-speed dual-clutch gearbox while each of the front wheels features a single-ratio reduction gearbox.
