T-Mobile US Inc (NASDAQ:TMUS) Trying To Attract New Users With Free ‘Pokemon Data’ For A Year

T-Mobile US Inc (NASDAQ:TMUS) was never going to take a back seat on an opportunity that has the potential to draw in new users to the network. The wireless company has already taken note of the buzz around Pokemon Go and is now ready to use it to its advantage. In a bid to attract some users and score some points over rivals, the carrier plans to offer free and unlimited data for gamers playing the game on its network.

 Pokemon Go Offer

The offer will run for one year and is open to all users who claim it through the company’s Tuesday app, over the next four Tuesdays starting July 19. Free Data will not be the only gift up for grabs. T-Mobile also plans to gift five lucky winners tickets for a Pokemon Go Hunting trip, to anywhere in the US. A $15 free Lyft credit will also be on offer.

The carrier has also teamed up with fast food chain Wendys Co (NASDAQ:WEN) to offer more benefits to Pokemon Go enthusiasts. There will be a 50% discount on some chargers and battery packs up for sale on the company’s stores. In addition, 250 Pokemon Go players stand to walk away with $100 worth of PokeCoins.

Betting Big On Pokemon Go

T-Mobile is essentially trying to make the most out of the Pokemon Go frenzy that seems to have taken the gaming industry by storm. Three days after its release the game had drawn more users than Twitter, becoming the biggest game in US history with over 21 million users. With the game expanding to other countries, the hype around the game can only continue to rise.

It is, however, unclear whether T-Mobile will succeed on its attempt to draw in new customers by offering free unlimited data for Pokemon Go. Given that the game consumes an average of 8MB per hour according to reports, few people could be swayed to make a switch from other networks. However, the same should go a long way in helping the carrier retain customers amidst fierce competition in the industry.
