QUALCOMM, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) is set to debut its latest microprocessors that are designed for wearable devices in line with the company’s objective of having more presence in the wearables market.

The Snapdragon Wear 1100 is the latest processor that the company has manufactured, and its announcement comes just a few months after Qualcomm’s announcement for the Snapdragon Wear 2100. The latter was specifically designed for smartwatches, but its successor is more of less intended to handle simpler functions that do not require complex functionality. The chip is, therefore, ideal for products such as headsets, fitness trackers and location tracking gadgets for children as well as the elderly.

The recent announcement was made at the Computex trade show that was held in Taiwan. Qualcomm’s senior director and smart wearables’ business lead Pankaj Kedia stated that the 1100 chips were designed for light usage meaning they can perform two to five functions efficiently. Additionally, they are well suited for targeted use. Some of the advantages of the new chips include the small size, high integration and low power requirement.

The new processors are part of Qualcomm’s plan to extend its focus beyond chips designed purely for mobile handsets. The company hopes that the chips will help it secure a good market share in the Internet of Things industry which is currently developing at a rapid pace. The IoT industry focuses mostly on smart cities, smart homes and smart bodies according to Kedia.

Some of the features of the Snapdragon Wear 1100 that were revealed include a Cat 1 modem that can handle Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and voice connectivity. It will also take advantage of the Qualcomm iZat location engine, support for apps that use geofencing to ensure proper monitoring and cell ID monitoring among other things. The firm also announced that the processors are currently ready for shipping.
