Android users will now be able to access the Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) VR app, which was previously available only to Samsung Gear VR users, thanks to the Google Play store. This translates to more Netflix shows, whereby the app users can now subscribe to its movie streaming service using Google’s Daydream View headset. However, the VR app will be independent; hence it will not be built around the Netflix app. Thus anyone accessing Netflix shows will have two apps that do different things.
Although it is somewhat similar to Netflix on Android TV, the VR platform, which was launched back in October, is a stand-alone application.
Netflix VR app only supports Daydream View
The app is squarely aimed at Daydream View owners thus it is only supporting a particular headset at the moment. But while the platform is still quite young, the tech giant is optimistic about its growth. Besides, the exclusive presence of the likes of HTC Vive and Oculus Rift makes the market more competitive.
Nonetheless, Daydream, which is a step above the $25 Cardboard, may not contend with its mentioned competitors but it aims at addressing one of the biggest problems of the VR industry. It is currently available at Amazon and various U.S. retailers like Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:BBY) and Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ), but it can also be expected in other regions in the future along with compatibility with other handsets.
Reviewers indicate that the application has issues
In as much as one can access lots of content on Netflix, it seems like the newly launched app has issues. Overheating of phones after 20-30 minutes of use has been reported by a multitude of Pixel users. However, this may be a problem that can be resolved quickly given that the app should be straightforward to use.
Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google’s VR platform has a price tag of $79, which is lower than Samsung Electronics Co Gear VR. It is perhaps the best mobile VR headset around at the moment. Meanwhile, Netflix’s stock was trading at $122.88 a fall of $0.36 or 0.29%.
