International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) Says That Communities Can Help Rebuild Aging Adults’ Social Capital

A tremendous number of the aging population is struggling with loneliness, which has been shown in various documents to have health risks. To some extent, the impact is extended to governments, which could be struggling to sustain health care for them. However, International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) thinks that the go-getter organizations could take advantage of this situation to create solutions, which would help improve how older adults connect with the world.

The technology giant is perhaps pointing at cognitive and cloud technology, which is quickly becoming integrated into the globe. A study carried out by IBM’s Institute for Business Value (IBV) outlines recommended actions that the organization could use to promote connection among older adults.

Personalized and adaptable community-based solutions

The aging population is growing very rapidly and according to the United Nations, Japan and Germany could have the greatest impact by 2050. It is estimated that 40% of the population from the two nations will be over the age of 60 while this demographic in Canada and the United Kingdom will be at 30%.

However, meeting the needs of the aging population can be done through personalized and adaptable community-based solutions. They do not have to be very costly and the use of a cognitive or cloud platform could, which includes the likes of natural language and artificial intelligence could be ideal.

Chief Health Transformation Officer at IBM Watson Health Dr. Paul Tang suggests, “In order to mitigate loneliness, we need to help people rebuild social connections and engagement with their communities.”

Building social connections for older adults

Various organizations are already taking charge in the use of technology. Front Porch is building a digital community, which would help to bring the older individuals together. Through digital tools, the organization feels a lot can be done to support the older population in their health, wellness and community engagement.

On the other hand, IBV outlines that solution providers, business organizations, educational institutions, healthcare providers as well as government agencies all have a role to play in meeting the needs of older adults. In the meantime, IBM’s stock closed at $151.25 a fall of $0.86 or 0.57%.
