Audi AG (FRA:NSU) to Acquire Texas-Based Luxury Car Rental Service

Audi AG (FRA:NSU) has signed a deal to take full control of Austin, Texas-based luxury car rental service Silvercar.

In a statement, Audi said that it is looking to acquire Silvercar in a bid to expand the company’s digital mobility solutions and services.

The automaker said that deal is expected to close in the first half of 2017, subject to approval by regulatory authorities.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Silvercar and Audi have worked together since 2012 to develop and deliver consumer mobility offerings under the Audi mobility, Silvercar and Dealerware brands.

In 2015, Audi participated in a $28 million Series C investment in Silvercar.

“It’s no secret that Silvercar and Audi have a longstanding relationship,” Silvercar CEO Luke Schneider said. “Heck, we’ve only ever rented Audi A4s… I believe, as does the Silvercar team, that we are on the verge of the most profound changes in the 120-year history of modern personal transportation.”

“The intersection of transportation and technology, influenced by changing demographics and innovative consumer models has created an exciting new world of mobility,” Schneider said.

Silvercar’s technology platform enables the management of transportation products and services in both the retail and corporate mobility spaces, including Audi shared fleet and Silvercar’s airport car-rental experience.

“Audi and Silvercar share a vision for the future of transportation,” Audi of America CFO Matt Carpenter said in the statement. “This acquisition enables Audi to move forward with a progressive partner and continue our technology leadership into the next era of mobility.”

In other news, Audi is joining hands with Porsche on vehicle development. This will help the parent, Volkswagen Group, to save money in the wake of its costly emissions test cheating scandal.

The two automakers will share a vehicle architecture strategy for “electrification, digitization, and autonomous driving.”

“The best brains of both companies will together set the technical course for the future. We are united by many shared values, above all, by our pursuit of the best solutions and the best offerings for our customers,” Rupert Stadler, chairman of the board of management of AUDI AG, said in a statement.
