Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is expected to add a “revolutionary” front-facing 3D camera to the iPhone 8, Apple Insider reported citing KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The 3D camera system would be used for a variety of applications, from biometric authentication to games, according to the analyst.
Kuo, who is regarded as the reliable and best Apple analyst, said in a note to an investor that the iPhone 8 will be a completely redesigned iPhone. It will sport an OLED screen and will add an infrared transmitting module and an infrared receiving module to accompany the FaceTime camera, according to the analyst.
Apple Betting on New 3D Camera Technology
The 3D camera system will allow users to replace the head of a character in a 3D game, or take a 3D selfie.
Additionally, the new camera system could allow for advanced biometric authentication. In the 10th anniversary iPhone, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is said to add two-step authentication, combining facial recognition with fingerprint scanning.
Kuo said that the new technology could be used for both facial and iris recognition. The iPhone maker “is expected to include a customized 1.4-megapixel image sensor in the infrared receiving model that will detect changes in light signals,” Apple Insider reported.
The analyst is optimistic about the prospects for Apple’s new technology. He believes that competing handsets will catch up over the next 1-2 years.
Moreover, Kuo said that the company will eventually add its advanced camera technology to the rear cameras in future iPhones.
Apple recently acquired Israeli facial recognition firm RealFace for $2 million. In January, the iPhone maker bought facial expression analysis firm Emotient for an undisclosed amount.
Other iPhone 8 Rumors
In addition to the front facing camera, the iPhone 8 is rumored to feature an edge-to-edge OLED display with glass back. It is said to have a 5.15-inch screen.
Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is expected to embed key components— including the FaceTime camera—within the display. Also, the tech giant is said to remove the Touch ID home button and replace it with a “function area,” similar to Touch Bar in the new MacBook Pro.
Moreover, rumors suggest that the iPhone 8 will feature wireless charging. The company is reportedly working on a long-range wireless charging technology.
The iPhone 8 would be an expensive handset, according to the rumors mill. It is said to come with a hefty price tag of $1,000.
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 8 in September, along with new iPhone 7s models.
