Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has found itself in an awkward position following reports that its private-label USB cords were susceptible to catching fire, thus endangering users and their devices.
Amazon has been selling the USB cables under its tech brand, AmazonBasics. The firm has been selling various types of cords including lightening chargers and USB cables for a wide range of devices including Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5, 6 and 7 as well as iPads. The retail giant went an extra step to make sure that the cords would be more attractive to customers through fairly cheaper pricing at $11.99 for a USB cord compared to $19 on Apple’s website.
Amazon’s USB cords reportedly dangerous
The cheaper pricing for the Amazon-branded USB cords might make them attractive but it appears they might end up being a costly decision for users. Numerous users reported in the review section that the AmazonBasics USB cords they purchased have been overheating to the extent of even melting. Some reviews also reported that the cables were catching fire and there was photographic evidence to prove it.
One of the victims of the faulty USB cords by the name Lyle B. Bowers suffered the same fate as the users complaining in the comment section. He strictly warned shoppers from purchasing the cords after his Amazon-branded cord overheated and destroyed his iPhone 6S while it was charging. Bowers explained that he was lucky that he noticed it before it caught fire, which would have potentially caused a bigger disaster.
“Despite some of the negative reviews I read about arching, sparking, melting, etc. I [was] skeptical and decided to proceed with ordering this product based on the overwhelming amount of positive reviews along with the reports of having positive experience with AmazonBasics cables in the past. Well I am a believer now!”
Despite the negative comments, there have also been positive comments about how good the cords are but most customers claim that they end up not working after six months. Amazon is yet to comment on the matter.
Amazon stock closed the latest trading session on Wednesday at $967.59.
