Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) To Unveil Carrier Billing On Play Store in India

Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) has moved to make it easier for Android users in India to buy apps, games, and digital media in Play Store. Unlike in the past where people had to pay via credit cards, direct carrier billing will come into play the tech giant having inked deals with two major players.

Carrier Billing Deal

The tech giant has collaborated with Airtel and Vodafone for the new billing option that seeks to bolster Play Store purchase in the world’s third-largest smartphone market. However, the service will be limited to postpaid users for starters waiting to see if the trio will agree on making it open to prepaid users. It may take long for the companies to agree on the same having emerged discussions to allow carrier billing begun in 2012.

This is not the first time that Google has moved to enable carrier billing for Play Store in India. The option has already been available to Idea customers but with little success in terms of purchases given that, the carrier is much smaller to Airtel and Vodafone in terms of coverage.

Bolstering Play Store Purchases

Reaching an agreement with Vodafone and Airtel is a milestone achievement for Google as it looks to bolster Play Store purchases in the country. The two carrier’s size and scope should allow the tech giant to gain access to a majority of smartphone users in India most of whom are on Android.

Carrier billing in India is still a work in progress given that Google still lists Idea as the only carrier supporting the same. However, once the service is fully launched the search giant should be at the center of app store purchases given the number of Android devices in the country.

Striking deals with the other carriers notably Reliance and BSNL may also have to come into play if Google is to achieve its goal on Play Store purchases in one of the fastest growing smartphone markets in the world.

Google stock was down by 1.3%, closing Monday Trading session at lows of $792.45 a share.
