Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) To Test Its Wireless Network At Nascar

Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) subsidiary Google is planning to test its new wireless network at the Nascar races.

Google was given permission from the Federal Communications Commission to proceed with the wireless network testing which it plans to use to bring more affordable internet to mobile users. The FCC approved the company’s application for wireless network testing plans about a week ago. The software and tech giant plans to deploy the equipment for carrying out the tests in four areas during summer. The test areas will include Brooklyn, Bristol, Richmond and Darlington where the Nascar events will be held.

“The STA is needed to test the transmission of [LTE] broadband data from racecars to transportable/fixed base stations located at racetrack facilities in connection with four NASCAR automobile racing events,” Google pointed out.

The tests will involve Google’s 3.5GHz technology

According to Lightreading, Google filed for Special Temporary Authority (STA) with the FCC on April 27 this year, to allow it to test its 3.5GHz technology on Nascar raceways. The company was awarded the STA on May 22. The fact that the technology will be operating on a 3.5 GHz frequency means the company does not require a spectrum license. This is because the FCC set aside the 3.5 GHz frequency for Wi-Fi extension through its Citizens Broadband Radio Service plan.

The fact that the technology does not require a spectrum license will be advantageous to Google because unlicensed bands should help lower the costs. However, users have to be careful so as not to interfere with those that have already been using the airwave bands. This includes satellite receiver stations and military radar stations.

The software and tech giant has disclosed very few details about the wireless network, though there should be more details as the testing commences. The company has also requested FCC authorization to test the 3.5 GHz technology in 24 cities across the U.S. So far there is no guarantee that the tests will result in a marketable product though the firm is working towards a commercially viable network.
