Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) Teams Up With Crytek For VR Development

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) has announced a partnership with Crytek where the two firms will work together to develop advanced hardware for virtual reality.

The joint project will be geared towards the creation of dedicated VR labs for universities and college. AMD stated that it will offer Pro Duo graphics cards for the project. It will also provide the LiquidVR SDK which will be offered for free courtesy of the GPUOpen initiative. The project will focus on both hardware and software and it will be the first VR venture for Crytek.

The partnership will work towards delivering VR equipment that is ready for use by researchers, students as well as developers. Crytek is famous for developing popular games such as Far Cry and Crisis 3. The studio stated that it will offer the source code of its engine for free to developers seeking to create applications for VR and that it aims to foster the development of talent for the future by making sure that institutions have the proper equipment to support those who wish to pursue careers in new industry fields.

Crytek also stated that the project will be initiated at Bahçeşehir University in Istanbul where the pilot phase of the project will be carried out. Raja Koduri, the chief architect and senior VP of AMD stated that the world is currently in a computer age that is driven by game engines and GPUs. He further added that the world needs a generation of developers that are well versed in GPU programming and know their way around game engines.

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli stated that the VR First labs will be the key incubator for fostering talent for the advancement of the VR industry. The project will be focused on tapping into the growing potential of the VR industry and creating more content for VR.
