IXYS Corporation (NASDAQ:IXYS) has announced the expansion of its product portfolio with the release of two 1200V SiC MOSFETs namely IXFN50N120SK and the IXFN70N120SK. It is important to note that these systems come in SOT-227 packages.
The company said that the new additions to its portfolio of SiC MOSFETs are designed to support switching and control in SiC-based products such as UPSs, rapid chargers and inverters.
According to Elmar Wisotzki, the Director of Technology at IXYS Germany, the new products they are making available further speak volumes of the company’s commitment to enable customers achieve best performance at improved efficiency. Wisotzki further said that IXFN50N120SK and the IXFN70N120SK are based on its matching technology. The executive further said that they two SiC systems come with the full advantage of the SiC power MOSFET baked in them.
How the two systems differ
IXYS Corporation has explained the difference and similarities between its two latest IC systems. The company said that while IXFN50N120SK boasts 40 miliohm (typ), IXFN70N120SK on the other hand boasts 25 miliohm (typ). But they both feature 1200V blocking voltage, which comes in MiniBLOC (SOT-227) package.
Potential application cases
IXYS has said that its new systems could find application in rapid chargers, solar inverters and UPS systems.
What are the opportunities?
You find that other than mentioning the potential application areas markets for its new systems, IXYS Corporation has not said what kind of opportunities it is training its sight on. But if you have been following news in the recent times, you may have heard Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) and other automakers expanding into electric vehicle space talking about rapid recharging. Tesla, for instance, wants drivers of its Model S, Model X and the coming Model 3 to spend the least time as possible charging their battery-powered cars. As such, electric vehicle could be an exciting opportunity for IXYS.
The other area that is likely to offer massive opportunity for IXYS Corporation with its new systems is the renewable energy. You find that nations have committed to increase the capacity of their renewable energy product under the Paris Climate Agreement and solar is one source of energy that many nations are aiming to tap into. In that situation, there will be strong demand for solar inverters.
