Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) officials have stated that they will most likely not manage to achieve their target of 1 billion users for its latest operating system, Windows 10.

When the company launched Windows 10 a year ago, they speculated that the new OS will be installed in more than 1 billion PCs by the summer of 2018. However, the officials now feel that their projection was too ambitious and they will most likely not reach that target within the stipulated timeframe. Despite the recent reveal, the officials still believe that the firm will reach that target even though not within the timeframe.

A blog post from the software and tech company stated that Windows 10 had the best start in the firm’s history and there are more than 350 million devices running Windows 10 every month. The statement noted that Microsoft was pleased with the progress so far but the 1 billion target would take longer to achieve because the firm has shifted its focus to the hardware business.

One of the biggest culprits that that will cause the firm to miss its mark is the decision to terminate the mobile business. Nevertheless, Microsoft believes that it still is on the right path thanks to its plan to deploy more devices that run Windows 10. The idea is to introduce a range of devices that customers can purchase since convincing users to install Windows 10 is not yielding as many results as Microsoft had expected.

Windows 10 is currently available for laptops, desktops, Xbox and Windows phone and the Surface line of products. The company is expected to make the Surface products are more powerful and more appealing especially with the launch of the highly anticipated Surface Pro 5 and Surface Book 2. Microsoft’s plan to push for the adoption of Windows 10 on PCs has faced its fair share of hardships including legal matters due to unauthorized installs. Regardless, the company is confident that more devices will get on board as time goes by.
