Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is set to launch its most powerful video gaming console, the Xbox Project Scorpio, later in this year. It might be the last console generation.
Microsoft promises that the Scorpio will offer a great gaming experience. It will be able to play videos and games in the 4K resolution. In addition, the console will play the content in HDR.

The Project Scorpio will get a custom GPU built by Microsoft and AMD, according to a report from Digital Foundry via PolyGon. The custom made GPU will consist of 40 Radeon compute units running at 1172 MHz, compared to the Xbox One’s 853 MHz. On the CPU side, there will be 8 custom x86 cores at 2.3 GHz, 31% faster than the Xbox One.
Microsoft said that the Scorpio will offer the six-teraflop of processing power.
The console will come with 12 GB of GDDR5 RAM and 326 GB/s of memory bandwidth. It will feature a 2.5-inch 1 TB hard drive and will contain an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive.
According to the tech giant, the Scorpio will be backward compatible with Xbox One games, allowing users to play every single Xbox One game. The Xbox One is backwards compatible with the Xbox 360 games, but we don’t know whether the Scorpio will be backwards compatible with the Xbox 360 games.
As we reported earlier, the Scorpio might be the last console generation, according to Aaron Greenberg, the boss of Xbox marketing. He sees “the future is without console generations.”
“For us, we think the future is without console generations; we think that the ability to build a library, a community, to be able to iterate with the hardware — we’re making a pretty big bet on that with Project Scorpio. We’re basically saying, ‘This isn’t a new generation; everything you have continues forward and it works.’ We think of this as a family of devices,” Greenberg said in an interview with Engadget.
Scorpio Price and Release Date
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is expected to offer the Project Scorpio at $500. The console will arrive in Holiday 2017.
