Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has made good on its promise. Last year the tech giant promised to create a low-cost Windows virtual reality headset, which could be used alongside Windows 10 PCs. After partnering with a number of device makers, the company says the kits are ready for shipping. The first batch will be rolled out starting the end of March.
The company claims that the headsets will stand out from the crowd due to their manageable price. However, there were no concrete details regarding how much the devices would cost. Nonetheless, they will have an Acer prototype headset and will also allow access to Windows 10 Insider preview.
First release of a Windows Mixed Reality headset
The project went public last year. The company’s desire is to put onto the Xbox One family of devices mixed reality content. This will be the first release of a Windows Mixed Reality headset.
Terry Myerson, the Windows and Devices Group chief at Microsoft says there is a reason the words Mixed Reality are incorporated. She says, “We use this term mixed reality to represent this spectrum of augmented reality to virtual reality and everything in-between.”
The headset will give software makers a way to test applications
Due to the technological VR revolution, developers are always developing new programs, which of course need testing before being released to consumers. The headsets will come in handy in the testing of these applications. They will be opaque and will not allow users to see their physical surroundings alongside with holograms.
The launch of the developer’s program is a significant milestone for Microsoft, considering its aggressive push to have developers creates apps for Windows Mixed Reality devices.
It is also a game changer in the company’s official renaming of the Windows Holographic shell to Windows Mixed Reality. Nonetheless, it is not clear how the tech giant will carry out the distribution of the devices but it has promised to harmonize the processes. Apart from this, it will also offer step by step guidance into the building of apps for the new opaque headsets
