Strava App Updated To Allow Use Of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) Apple Watch Without Tethering iPhone

An update to the Strava cycling and running app has been released which allows the use of the Series 2 of the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) Apple Watch without it being tethered to the iPhone. With the update, it will now be possible users to track the heart rate, distance covered and even the pace without having their phones physically with them.

“We’re excited to add to our growing list of compatible devices, and see this as the first step in providing our athletes an excellent Strava experience on the Apple Watch Series 2,” said Mateo Ortega, the Head of Integration at Strava.

Other apps on Apple Watch that use the device’s GPS include some from various sports goods manufacturers and fitness technology firms.

Glass-film display technology

The new update from Strava comes in the wake of leaks revealing that the upcoming Apple Watch 3 is likely to have a new kind of display technology. First reported by Digitimes, the new display for the next version of the Apple Watch is expected to be made of a glass film.

Previously Apple used a technique called glass-on-glass. These displays were produced by TPK Holding but it is understood that its yield rate is low and has been struggling to meet demand. It is now understood that the firm has discontinued manufacturing display screens for the Apple Watch and will instead concentrate on producing OLED displays.

Higher yield rate

Part of the reason why Apple is shifting to displays that are made of glass film is that they are cheaper to make and they have a higher yield rate. Some of the firms that Apple is reportedly looking to subcontract for the production of these displays include Biel Crystal Manufactory, which is based in Hong Kong, and General Interface Solution, which is based in Taiwan.

Other features that the next Apple Watch will sport include sleep tracking, longer battery life, and cellular connectivity. The leaks further suggest that the smart watch is likely to be released from mid this year.

In Wednesday’s trading session, Apple Inc edged up by 0.30% to close the day at $137.11 a share.
