Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) CEO Mark Zuckerberg has released a statement to address social media claims that fake news circulating the social media platform influenced the voters, causing Trump to win.
The Facebook CEO stated on Thursday morning during the Techonomy conference in California that the fake news could not have possibly swayed the outcome of the elections. He further added that people undermined the massive number of people supporting Trump.
“To think it influenced the election in any way is a pretty crazy idea. I do think there is a certain profound lack of empathy in asserting that the only reason someone could have voted the way they did is they saw some fake news,” stated Zuckerberg.
The Facebook CEO also stated that those who believe that the fake news had anything to do with swaying the outcome of the election probably have not gotten the message that Trump’s supporters are trying to send. Zuckerberg released the statement following questions as to whether social media tools had an impact on the election outcome. Dave McClure, a technology investor described technology as a “propaganda medium” that has played a key role towards the spreading of fake information.
According to Zuckerberg, Facebook has been carrying out studies on the impact of News Feed. He believes that the belief that News Feed prevents diverse opinions is a misconception and that it is also a difficult theory to put away. He also pointed out that it has always been difficult for his company to make improvements on the feature.
“All of the research we have suggests that this hasn’t really been a problem,’’ stated Zuckerberg.
A few months ago, the company was on the spot after critics claimed that it was being biased of the topics that made their way to the trending topics section. Zuckerberg believes that the new claims that Facebook had something to do with Trump winning the elections are just baseless accusations.
Facebook stock closed the latest trading session at $120.80.
