Rumors suggest that Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is building its own version of Microsoft Office.
According to a February report by The Information, Amazon Web Services (AWS) is planning to launch its own word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation applications. The company could launch the service in near future.
AWS is a cloud computing business of Amazon. The e-commerce giant is looking to take on Microsoft Office and Google G Suite with its office suite of applications, according to the report.
Citing two people with knowledge of Amazon’s plans, The Information said that AWS has been “working on upgrades to its WorkMail email-calendar app and its WorkDocs file storage-collaboration app to make them more attractive to corporate customers”.
One person told the publcation that “AWS has also told some large corporate customers it’s considering bundling these apps with its recently launched Chime video conferencing apps into a new productivity app suite that will compete with Google G Suite and Microsoft Office 365.”
AWS sells cloud computing services to companies around the world. It offers a suite of cloud services from 16 geographical regions across the world. It offers more than 70 services including networking, application services, database, storage, analytics, and the Internet of Things apps.
Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) remain quiet about its purported office suite of applications. We believe that the e-commerce giant could break its silence and announce details regarding its own version of Microsoft Office sometime this year.
Microsoft Office
Microsoft Office is a suite of applications, servers, and services. It was first introduced by Bill Gates in August 1988 in Las Vegas.
Microsoft Office’s most-widely used version is the desktop version that is available on computers running the Windows and macOS operating systems. The most current desktop version is Office 2016 for Windows and macOS, released in 2015.
Microsoft also offers Office Mobile, a free-to-use version of Office applications for mobile devices. In addition, the software giant operates Office Online, a web-based version of Office applications, which is included as part of a Hotmail or Outlook account.
Meanwhile, shares of Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) were trading up 0.27% in the morning session on Friday. The share price of the online retailer is up 33% so far this year.
