“The Grand Tour”, a reboot of the popular car-oriented TV show “Top Gear” created by Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), has now become the most pirated TV show ever.
Pirated Viewership
“The Grand Tour” is considered the most expensive TV show in history with a whopping budget of £160 million. As if that record is not yet enough, it is also considered the most pirated TV show to date.
Since the launch of “The Grand Tour” on November 18 in Austria, Germany, Japan, UK, and US, its pilot episode has already been downloaded almost eight million times around the world. As for Amazon.com, this makes the said episode its most watched episode in history. On the premiere date as well, the company has recorded its second largest one-day new Amazon Prime registrations.
The second episode has already been downloaded about 6.40 million times while the third episode has already been downloaded 4.60 million times. Downloads in Britain comprise 13.70% of the total figure.
“It has overtaken every big show— including “Game Of Thrones”— for the totals across different platforms,” said Chris Elkins, MUSO Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) of the tremendous piracy act.
Despite the efforts of content producers to counter rampant piracy around the world, consumers still find a way to reproduce and access paid content, frustrating a lot of companies as they lose revenue.
How It Affects Amazon.com
For the pirated pilot episode alone, Amazon.com is believed to have already lost revenue of about £3.20 million in Britain alone.
“The Grand Tour” is part of the eCommerce giant’s broader strategy to gain more Amazon Prime subscribers. Consequently, the company has spent substantially to promote the TV show.
When reached out for a comment on the massive pirated viewership, Amazon.com has reiterated that it is thrilled to bring “The Grand Tour” in more than 200 countries soon.
Amazon.com has closed at $760.12 on Monday, down by 1.11%.
