Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) And “American Girl” Tackles Racism In New Film

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has released a new movie that addresses current racism issues, specifically police brutality and racism.

The film is based on the American Girl franchise and it highlights the difficulty that the African American community faces in the US. The movie features a young black girl growing up in the 1960,s during the civil rights movement. One of the captivating lines within the first few minutes of the movie states, “The moon might be a safer place for a black child to grow up in than America.”

The above is just one of the many discussions in the film that highlight racial discrimination in the US. The film is titled “An American Girl Story—Melody 1963: Love Has to Win” and it has a running time just shy of 50 minutes. The storyline revolves around a ten-year-old girl who experiences racial inequality from all sides. Some of her experiences include arrests on young ladies for dining at a lunch counters designated for white people, and police brutality against peaceful black American protestors. The film also highlights the bombing of the Birmingham church in 1963.

The young girl also faces racism from her classmates and is at one point accused of stealing a dress from a department store. The film exploits the nature of racism and spares no expense at bringing out the seriousness of the matter. It also addresses various issues that exist currently in the US, such as the ‘Black Lives Matter” movement. The latter arose due to the rising number of African-Americans killed by police as well as the spiraling police brutality cases.

“We couldn’t imagine it would be as relevant as it is when we took this on,” said Amazon Studios head of Kids Programming, Tara Sorensen.

Tara believes that the film will act as a vital tool for parents and children to talk about issues such as police brutality.
