Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) voice assistant has been crowned as the best voice-based digital assistant having trounced its rivals Cortana and Siri. In a study carried out by Loup Ventures, the virtual assistants were asked 800 questions and graded on two metrics based on their responses.

Virtual Assistants Ratings

Google Assistant came on top on understanding 99.9% of the questions and answering 74.8% of them correctly. Apple’s Siri came a close second on understanding 94.4% of the questions and answering 66.1% of them correctly. Cortana which understood 97.3% of the question came a distant third in answering 48.8% of the questions correctly.

Google and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) assistants tied when it came to local commerce and command categories. However Google Assistant affirmed its credentials on matters relating to navigation and information. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) Cortana, on the other hand, came third in all the categories except information where it came second.

Cortana’s poor performance compared to the other two was due to the fact it could not answer questions correctly. However, that does not mean that it cannot improve especially given that Microsoft is aggressively investing in its search platform Bing.

Digital Assistant Importance

This is not the first time that Google has come on top when it comes to what its digital assistant can do. In February, Google Assistant installed in home devices trounced Alexa for Amazon Echo further affirming its credentials as a reliable personal assistant.

Loup Manager, Gene Munster, believes voice assistants will play an important role in the future especially with the growing demand for speech driven user interfaces.

“The importance of voice assistants in the screen less future is hard to overestimate. We see speech-driven user interfaces as a key component of the next computing paradigm, so it’s helpful to understand empirically where each platform stands today, “said Mr. Munster in a blog post

Having an edge when it comes to voice assistants is of great importance to Google given that it uses the same technology to bolster its lucrative and most important search business. With more search traffic transitioning to voice interfaces the company can only continue to bolster its technology as speech-driven user interfaces become the “next big thing”.

Google’s stock was up by $8.30 in Monday trading session ending the day at highs of $932.82 a share.
