Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) Has Plans To Use Salt In Fixing Renewable Energy’s Storage Problem

Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) so-called secretive X skunk has a promise of transforming the world with its its latest idea. It is code named Malta and comprises antifreeze and vats of salt.

This is the same research lab that was responsible for hatching Google’s driverless car and that was one decade ago. This time around it is working on a plan that will see it come up with a system that will aid in the storage of renewable energy. In a normal scenario, this would have been the kind of energy that would simply have been wasted.

As a matter of fact, it can be located anywhere and will last longer in comparison to lithium-ion batteries. It will also be competing on price with a number of the existing clean energy storage methods. It will also be posing competition to new hydroelectric plants.

The new initiative forms part of a series of energy projects at X which majorly depend on drone delivery. Asides from that, it also associated with a mixed record with audacious “moonshots” such as Google Glass.

Currently, a number of governments and venture capitalists are cutting down on support and funding for technology and businesses. More specifically, these are the kind of businesses established around alternatives to fossil fuels. The provider’s driverless cars indeed hit markets with a thud. However, X’s clean-energy projects haven’t yet hit that top notch though the lab remains dedicated and won’t be giving up any time soon.

Obi Felten, one of the directors at X opined, “If the moonshot factory gives up on a big, important problem like climate change, then maybe it will never get solve. If we do start solving it, there are trillions and trillions of dollars in market opportunity.”

She is heading The Foundry where a Malta team comprising of less than 10 researchers is testing stripped-down prototype. At the moment, Malta hasn’t yet been categorized as an official X project.
