BMW And International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) Partner On Cars

International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) has announced a partnership with BMW aimed at integrating the tech giants’ technology into BMW cars. In so doing, BMW vehicles will be able to fetch data which will be used in the development of new systems. This is with a view to enhancing the efficiency of the cars and also allowing for increased personalization capabilities.

“With this agreement, our companies will work together to lay the foundations so that BMW’s drivers can benefit from Watson’s conversational and machine learning capabilities,” the global head of IBM’s Watson IoT business, Harriet Green said.

Intelligent cars

The partnership aims to make use of the machine-learning capabilities of Watson to achieve a variety of objectives. For instance, self-healing, where the car is infused with technology that enables it to self-diagnose whenever there is a malfunction and go on to fix itself, is one possibility.

Self-socializing, where a vehicle’s ability to connect and communicate with other cars is developed, and self-learning, where a given vehicle is able to offer advice and tips to the owner or owners of vehicles with regards to vehicle maintenance and driving, are also other possibilities.

Self-figuring, where a vehicle is able to learn to detect and adapt to the tastes, habits, and preferences of a particular driver, and self-integrating, where the vehicle is able to connect to various other computing devices belong to the occupants of the car, may also be made possible through this partnership. The partnership between the two companies will also involve enhancing autonomous car systems.

Additionally, the car’s manual could be integrated into Watson and this would enable owners to ask anything concerning their car in a natural language and get the right answer in the same.

Munich facility

As part of the deal, a group of engineers and researchers from BMW will relocate to the Munich headquarters of IBM. The deal will see four BMW cars moved to IBM’s Munich facility. BMW i8 hybrid sports car is the particular models that will be used in this project.

Shares of International Business Machines Corp edged downwards by 0.57% on Wednesday to close the day at $166.19 a piece.
