Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) Enables Fully Encrypted Video Calls On WhatsApp

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) messaging app WhatsApp has finally unveiled the much-awaited video calling feature as it continues to set standards on what messaging apps can do.  The feature comes at a time when the app is under immense pressure from other rival apps, also gunning for market share in the messaging space.

WhatsApp Video Call

The video calling feature was one of the most asked features by the more than 1 billion users of the app.  To use it users will now have to update their current apps, as its support is not in older apps.  By simply pushing the call button in the top right corner, the app should allow one to choose between a voice and a video call.

While using the video calling feature it is also possible to switch between the rear and front-facing camera. The update also comes with a mute option that allows one to block the receiver from hearing what is being said on the microphone. Last month the company unveiled new camera features that allow users to place emoji stickers or draw on photos and videos on chats.

“We’re introducing this feature because we know that sometimes voice and text just aren’t enough. There’s no substitute for watching your grandchild take her first steps, or seeing your daughter’s face while she’s studying abroad,” said WhatsApp in a sentimental statement.

Competition

The new feature puts Facebook’s WhatsApp in the same line as Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) FaceTime, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) Skype and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)  Duo app. What makes the WhatsApp video call function unique from the others is the fact that it is cross-platform enabled, allowing users to carry out video calls across various platforms.

Video messages being channeled through the video calling function are also fully encrypted as Facebook continues to play its role in guaranteeing privacy. There are also reports that the two-factor authentication process could come soon as the company continues to explore ways of taking security in the app to another level.

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) stock was up by 1.84% in Tuesday trading session closing the day at highs of $117.20 a share.
