Infinera Corp. (NASDAQ:INFN) has announced that it successfully tested its subsea cables together with Canalink using the Infinera Infinite Capacity Engine.
Infinera and Canalink carried out the subsea cable tests using the Infinera Capacity Engine (ICE4) which incorporates the company’s fourth generation photonic integrated circuit. The test allowed the company to showcase its ability to upgrade the capacity of the cables 13-fold. The test was carried out on a 1,393-kilometer subsea cable owned by Canalink. The latter owns a network of subsea fiber optic cables that connect the Iberian Peninsula with the Canary Islands as well as Africa’s West coast.
“The successful field test with Infinera demonstrated that we can achieve approximately 13 times more capacity than we initially estimated on our subsea link,” stated Canalink’s General Director, Carlos Suárez.
The successful cable tests provide a positive outlook on future operations
The success of the Infinera subsea cable tests provides the confidence to future operations on the subsea fiber cables, thus providing a positive outlook for future operations and maintenance. Suárez also pointed out that the innovative technology offered by Infinera’s Infinite Capacity Engine was proof that the use of the technology could allow Canalink to maximize the use of its infrastructure. It also allows his firm to protect its investment.
Infinera’s Vice President Scott Jackson stated that his company was focused on being a channel for advanced capabilities to the undersea cable market. He also pointed out that Infinera was happy to give Canalink the capacity to optimize the capacity on their subsea cables as they did in the cable tests.
Jackson also pointed out that the cable tests provided an opportunity for Infinera to demonstrate the benefits of SD-FEC gain sharing and ICE4 Nyquist subcarriers. This allows the subsea cables to transfer higher modulation formats so as to foster higher fiber capacity. This in turn translates to more return on investment. Earlier this year, Infinera unveiled its Infinite Capacity Engine-based subsea platforms, mainly the XTS‑3600 meshponders and the XTS‑3300. The new platforms deliver innovation that allows undersea cables to push the boundaries.
Infinera stock closed the latest trading session on Tuesday at $9.58, marking a 3.12 percent gain compared to the value of the stock during the previous close.
