Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) will launch the Xbox Project Scorpio, its most powerful console ever, at the end of 2017. According to the Redmond-based tech titan, the Scorpio will be the last console generation.

Microsoft promises that the Scorpio will play 4K video and 4K video games. It will also be able to play games and video in HDR.

In this post, we will discuss everything we know so far about the Xbox Project Scorpio.

Microsoft Xbox Scorpio Specs

The Xbox Scorpio will have a custom GPU designed by Microsoft in conjunction with AMD, according to a report from Digital Foundry (via PolyGon).

The GPU will have 40 Radeon compute units running at 1172 MHz, compared to the Xbox One’s 853 MHz. On the CPU side, there will be eight custom x86 cores at 2.3 GHz, 31% faster than the original Xbox One. The Scorpio will deliver the six-teraflop of processing power.

The Scorpio will feature 12 GB of GDDR5 RAM and 326 GB/s of memory bandwidth. The console will come with a 2.5-inch 1 TB hard drive. Unlike the PS4 Pro, the Scorpio will contain an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive.

The Scorpio will be backward compatible with Xbox One games. This means players will be able to play every single Xbox One game on the Scorpio.

The Xbox One is backwards compatible with the Xbox 360 games, but it is not clear whether the Scorpio will be backwards compatible with the Xbox 360 games.

Scorpio Might Be the Last Console Generations

Aaron Greenberg, the boss of Xbox marketing, told Engadget that the Scorpio might be the last console generation because he thinks “the future is without console generations.”

“For us, we think the future is without console generations; we think that the ability to build a library, a community, to be able to iterate with the hardware — we’re making a pretty big bet on that with Project Scorpio. We’re basically saying, ‘This isn’t a new generation; everything you have continues forward and it works.’ We think of this as a family of devices,” Greenberg said during an interview with Engadget.

Price and Release Date

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has said that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) wants to the Scorpio “to be at a console price-point.”

The Scorpio is expected to be offered at $500.

We expect that the Redmond tech giant will launch the console in Holiday 2017.
