Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk is a firm believer that humans need a digital layer of intelligence in their brain, if they are to avert the risk of being slaves of artificial intelligence. The executive has already warned of the dangers of the technology, which he fears could end up treating humans like pets.

Neural Lace Technology

According to Musk, not all AI developments are safe for humans, and that caution should be taken as the technology continues to evolve. It is for this reason that he formed the OpenAI platform last year as part of an effort that seeks to ensure humans stay ahead of AI.

Speaking on stage at Vox Media’s Code Conference in California, Musk unveiled ‘neural lace’, a technology he says companies serious about averting the risks of AI should be working on.

Neural Lace is essentially a wireless brain computer system that Musk says will help humans have an edge over AI going forward.

“I don’t love the idea of being a house cat, but what’s the solution? I think one of the solutions that seem maybe the best is to add an AI layer,” he said. “A third digital layer that could work well and symbiotically” with the rest of your body.

Neural Lace Integration

The technology according to Musk will not have to be inserted into a human brain through the skull. Instead, it could be inserted into the jugular vein. The digital layer according to the CEO will help solve some fundamental input/output limitations. Musk says he is not working on the technology himself but believes those who are able should work on it.

Speaking at a Recode’s Code Conference, Musk also made it clear that he is only worried over the efforts of one company on artificial intelligence. Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) efforts on the fast-growing technology according to the executive are worth paying attention to going forward.
