Sony Corp (TYO:6758) Expected to Launch PlayStation 5 in 2019

Sony Corp (TYO:6758) is said to be preparing a successor to the PlayStation 4 called, dubbed the PlayStation 5.

The PlayStation 4, a successor to the PlayStation 3, was arrived in 2013 to compete with Microsoft Xbox One. The PS4 received a good public response and its sales crossed more than 50 million units.

Microsoft is set to release the Project Scorpio at the end of this year. The Scorpio will be a powerful gaming console than the PlayStation 4. So, many people believe that Sony will launch the PlayStation 5 in 2018 to take on the Scorpio. But, we think that it’s highly unlikely.

Macquarie Research analyst Damian Thong, who successfully predicted the release of both the PS4 slim and the PS4 Pro, believes that the PlayStation 5 will be more powerful than the Project Scorpio.

The Scorpio will feature 6 teraflops of graphics processing unit. Microsoft’s most powerful console will be to play 4K games and videos.

Thong said that the PlayStation 5 will get more than 10 teraflops of power, significantly more than the Scorpio. The console will also play games and videos in the 4K resolution.

According to rumors, Sony Corp (TYO:6758) will launch two versions of the PlayStation 5. The console is said to offer a support for a virtual reality headset and will come along with the virtual reality headset.

PlayStation 5 Price and Release Date

Thong believes that the PlayStation 5 will be released in the second half of 2018. However, we expect that the console won’t arrive until 2019.

Sony is expected to price the PlayStation 5 at $500. Microsoft could also offer the Project Scorpio for $500.

Meanwhile, shares of Sony Corp (TYO:6758) closed up 0.07% on Tuesday. The stock is up more than 23% so far this year.
