Paypal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) To Close The Curtain On Its Phone Apps For BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY), Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)

Paypal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) has announced that it will terminate its mobile apps for major operating systems from Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY), and Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN).

The online payment company will not release updates for its Windows app, the Amazon Fire app and the BBM app. The discontinuation will be as of June 30, though people who still use the apps for their PayPal transactions can continue to use them. The announcement which was made on Thursday highlights the changing digital payment world, thus suggesting that the payment company wants to evolve in line with the wave of change.

The decision will allow resources to be diverted elsewhere

The statement released by PayPal mentioned that it was not an easy decision to terminate support for the apps. Nonetheless, the firm believes that it is the decision will guide to the right direction so that investments are structured to provide the best services to its customers. Paypal also stated that it will still continue to work together with mobile service providers, and it also apologized to those who will be inconvenienced by the decision.

PayPal also announced that Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Android devices running Android 4.03 or higher and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) devices running iOS 8.1 or higher will have to upgrade to the latest version of the PayPal app. The latest version of the app is version 6.0. The company’s president and CEO Dan Schulman addressed the Mobile World Congress conference held in Barcelona. He stated that his firm has a massive opportunity to foster transformation to financial services and commerce.

PayPal’s vice president of consumer product Joanna Lambert posted a statement on the company’s blog where she also noted that the decision to terminate support for the PayPal app on the mobile platforms was not an easy one. Peer to peer payments via BBM will still be possible while Windows users can include the PayPal add-on to their outlook accounts.
