NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) to Supply AI Supercomputer for Volvo’s Self-Driving Cars

NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) is teaming with Volvo to supply artificial intelligence supercomputer for the automaker’s self-driving cars.

Volvo is looking to bring autonomous vehicles on the road by 2021. The automaker has formed a partnership with Autoliv to build self-driving software, according to a report by The Verge.

NVIDIA will supply DRIVE PX supercomputer for use in Volvo’s autonomous cars. The Drive PX a complete platform designed for self-driving cars. It is deemed to be “the world’s most advanced self-driving car platform.”

The NVIDIA DRIVE PX platform is equipped with the next-generation Xavier processor that delivers 30 trillion deep learning operations per second. The platform fuses data from cameras, lidar, radar and other sensors. It can then use AI to understand the 360-degree environment surrounding the car, localize itself on an HD map and anticipate potential hazards while driving, according to NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA).

Volvo seems bullish on the self-driving cars business.

In addition to selling self-driving cars, the automaker also plans to self-driving software. Autoliv and Volvo created a new company, Zenuity, to build self-driving software that will power Volvo’s own cars as well as will be sold other carmakers.

Last month, NVIDIA announced a partnership with Toyota to supply artificial intelligence hardware and software technologies for autonomous driving systems. Toyota selected the NVIDIA DRIVE PX AI car computer platform for advanced autonomous driving systems.

Meanwhile, shares of NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) were closed down 1.27% on Monday. The stock is up more than 42% so far this year. During the last 12 months, the company’s share price has surged more than 200%.
