Nokia Corp (ADR) (NYSE:NOK) is making efforts to enhance its presence in the Internet of Things (IoT) Industry and the company recently revealed its new horizontal platform called Impact.

Nokia claims that the platform deals with data contextualization, device management, data analytics, event processing and data collection. It also deals with applications enabling for any protocol and any device across a wide range of applications. It handles all the aspects of machine-to-machine connections (M2M). The number of M2M connections could increase to 12.2 billion in the next four years. This also translates to the rise of numerous industries and devices for healthcare monitoring, video surveillance, asset tracking and smart meters among others.

Nokia’s IoT product strategy director Frank Ploumen stated that such technologies begin to make sense when factors such as costs and scale are supportive. That means infrastructure components have to be highly efficient. Ploumen noted that his company’s history shows that Nokia has upheld efficiency. The director also pointed out that the platform’s approach is modular. This means it allows businesses to mix and match services such as analytics or device management based on the components that they use from third parties.

Impact also includes the company’s Motive Connected Device Platform (CDP) which offers support to more than 80,000 sensor models or devices. CDP already manages and connects more than 1.5 billion products. Nokia officials claim that the company’s experience in devices and networks means it is suited to identify problems on a variety of business models including public and private hybrid clouds. The company wants to take advantage of situations where government agencies, service providers and businesses will seek to combine more than one IoT product for various business combinations.

Nokia also aims to enhance efficiency by overcoming difficulties presented by horizontal platforms such as protocols and security concerns. End-point security, cloud and network are some of the areas that the company will be dealing with through the new platform. Ploumen also revealed that the firm created an adapter that will help to address different protocols within the impact platform.
