Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is expected to launch its most powerful video console at the end of this year. Dubbed the Xbox Project Scorpio, the console will feature eight CPU cores and six teraflops of processing power.
The Scorpio will deliver a true 4K gaming experience, according to the company.
Here is all you need to know about the Scorpio.
Microsoft Xbox Scorpio
Microsoft said that the Scorpio will have eight CPU cores, six teraflops of processing power, and more than 320 GB of memory bandwidth.
According to the tech giant, the Scorpio will not replace the Xbox One S. Reports suggest that the console will be 40% more powerful than the Sony’s recently launched PlayStation 4 Pro. But a new analyst report claims that the upcoming PlayStation 5 will be powerful than the Scorpio with 10 teraflops of processing power. Sony is expected to launch the PlayStation 5 in 2019.
The Scorpio would have two major enhancements. Firstly, the console would offer a 4K gaming experience. Secondly, it would support hi-fidelity virtual reality.
The console is said to be powered by AMD chips.
In a statement, AMD said that “we are proud that Microsoft has chosen to expand their Xbox One family of devices with two new consoles featuring AMD’s high-performance semi-custom SoCs that support revolutionary new technologies like HDR, 4K, and high-fidelity VR to enable the next generation of immersive gaming experiences.”
Rumors indicate that the console could feature the company’s Vega chipset.
The Scorpio would provide support for virtual reality. But it is important to know that the console will not come with any VR headset. Instead, it will support VR sets from other manufacturers.
The console would be backward compatible with Xbox One games. That means players would be able to play every single Xbox One title on the Scorpio. The Xbox One is backward compatible with the Xbox 360 games. At this time, we do not know whether or not the Scorpio would be backwards compatible with the Xbox 360 games.
Xbox Scorpio Price and Release Date
Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) sees the Scorpio as a premium product.
Aaron Greenberg, the boss of the Xbox marketing team, said that the Scorpio would be a “premium and very high-end” video gaming console.
Later, Xbox chief Phil Spencer told the tech fans that he wants to the Scorpio “to be at a console price-point.”
“I’m not trying to go and compete with a high-end rig. Because we’re building one spec, we’re able to look at the balance between all the components and make sure that it’s something we really hit that matters to consumers and gamers,” Spencer said.
According to reports from multiple sources, the Scorpio would be sold at $400.
As far as the release date is concerned, the console is likely to launch in Holiday 2017.
We expect that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) will release details about the Scorpio and its rumored Surface devices in June.
