Facebook is keen on staking a big presence in the second-biggest economy in the world. Interestingly, China has also called for the establishment of an international Internet governance system. China also sought cooperation between nations to standardize the use of the internet and wants accelerated efforts to promote controls. Liberal activists complain that such control as stifling of free expression.

Currently, both Facebook and Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR), are banned in China. As a result, Zuckerberg has been trying to meet the leaders of the country to get an entry into the country since it has the biggest number of Internet users in the world. China has 668 million Internet users according to last year’s data.

Great Firewall

China’s increasing control of the Internet has been termed as the Great Firewall. The ruling Communist Party’s Politburo Standing Committee wants users not to cross the line while discussing government in China. Censors in the nation have expanded their authority over time.

The nation’s regulator has also been warning repeatedly that an untamed cyberspace would create a risk to domestic security, specifically his own government. As a result, the government, in his words, would decide who would be allowed into its house. It is not clear whether the recent meeting with Zuckerberg made any headway into launching the social media site there.
