Eldorado Gold Corp (USA) (NYSE:EGO) reported on Tuesday that one of its contracted workers lost his life in an accident that took place at the Skouries gold and copper in Greece.
The mining company made the announcement on Tuesday, revealing the sad news about the demise of one of the mine workers. The Skouries gold and copper mine is currently under construction and Eldorado claims that the incident is currently under investigation. The announcement revealed that the employee was hit by a huge branch that fell from a tree on Monday and was not in any way.
“Our deepest condolences and support go out to the individual’s family, friends and colleagues at this time. Safety is our top priority at Eldorado Gold and we are committed to the well-being of our employees and contractors on all of our sites,” stated George Burns, the president and Chief Executive Officer of Eldorado Gold.
The Canadian mining firm already has ongoing operations in one of the mines located in Stratoni, north of Greece. Skouries and Olympias have been working on developing the Skouries and Olympias project for many years but progress has been slow due to opposition from Greek authorities. The two parties have been going back and forth, leading to more delays in the process.
The disagreements between Eldorado Gold and Greek authorities have been due to the testing methods and their compliance with the environmental regulations at the controversial mine. The permits for those testing methods are currently pending approval. The Canadian company announced in July that it plans to commence production from the mine in 2020 and that it had completed the review process of the capital spending for the project.
The latest announcement about the death of the employee further adds to the company’s problems at the Skouries mine. It is not clear whether the incident will further complicate things with the Greek authorities. As for the Olympias project, licensing is in its final stages and production is expected to commence before the end of the year.
Eldorado stock closed the latest trading session on Tuesday at $2.03.
