BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) Expects Updates For Unlocked Privs Soon

BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) will release software updates for its unlocked AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) Blackberry Priv in the next few weeks.

The company reportedly released a beta update for Marshmallow and the updates might be available as early as June for the AT&T version. Reports also indicate that the updates have already been rolled out through other channels so that they can reach as many Blackberry Priv users as possible. AT&T stated that its Priv customers have to wait for these updates because they do not get any other updates apart from those released by the company.

The phone has not received custom ROMs and users are therefore stuck on the Lollipop Android OS version. Blackberry is however working on solving the problem. The Priv OS upgrade brings a number of changes that aim to fix some of the issues as well as enhancing the Blackberry Priv experience. Some of the problems that users have complained about include the inability of the device to find 5 GHz networks Bluetooth sharing and Bluetooth OnStar connections failing for no good reason.

Some of the other problems that have been reported from the Priv’s old OS version include overheating and failure to detect SIM cards. These are just a few of the many issues that have plagued the Priv and software upgrades have been eagerly awaited to help solve the problems. A website known as CrackBerry has reported that the update is quite bulky at 1805.3 MB so users have to make sure that they have enough space in their device. The site has leaked information about updates a few times but no official dates have been mentioned so far. Nevertheless, there is speculation that the updates will be made available in June.

The updates for the unlocked version of the Priv were released towards the end of April where it released the Marshmallow updates. Developers have been working on fixes for both Android N and Marshmallow 6.0.1 as adoption of the new OS version rises.
