Apple News, the No. 15 ranked mobile app in the United States, doesn’t allow publishers to make money from their articles. But Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is reportedly working to let publishers add Google AdSense into their articles that send to the Apple News app.

The iPhone maker could soon allow top media partners to use their own technology to fill the ad space in their content, AdAge reported, citing people familiar with the plans.

Currently, the app allows publishers set up ad campaigns in their Apple News articles but “it just takes a lot of additional effort,” according to a top publishing executive, who talked to AdAge and wanted to remain anonymous.

According to unnamed people with knowledge of Apple’s plans, publishers will soon be able to use their own advertising technology – such as Google’s DoubleClick for Publishers – to deliver ads into Apple News.

Apple News is a popular app that has approximately 47 million monthly users, according to ComScore.

According to the report, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is working to introduce new ways for publishers to make money from their articles in its News app. It could enable publishers to sell subscriptions to people in its News app. In addition, the company is reportedly considering micropayment options to allow readers to access articles for cents at a time.

“The bigger thing is they’ve now seen the light,” the top publishing executive, who was familiar with the plans, told AdAge. “Apple is acknowledging it can’t force its ad technology into the marketplace and it makes more sense to allow standard ad serving.”

Meanwhile, shares of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) closed up 1.02% on Friday. The stock is up more than 24% so far this year. During the last 12 months, the iPhone maker’s share price has surged by over 49%.
