Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) might be planning to eliminate the 16GB variant for its future handsets starting with the iPhone 7.
New rumors about the company suggest that the iPhone maker plans to eliminate the 16GB base model in favor of variants that have higher memory capacity. This means that the base models of future iPhones will have higher memory capacity starting from 32GB. It is not clear whether the rumors are true since the company is carrying on in the usual fashion of maintaining silence until the actual launch in a few months.
IHS Technology’s Market Research Director Kevin Wang was the person who set the wheel going through a Weibo post that suggested that the base model of the iPhone 7 will feature a 32GB internal memory and a 2GB RAM. Wang stated that he acquired the information from a supply chain researcher. Previous rumors about the iPhone7 suggested that there will be two iPhone 7 Plus variants where one will feature a dual-lens camera but the other one will not. The rumors also suggested that the version with a dual-lens camera will have an impressive 3GB or RAM to support heavy image processing. The lower model is expected to still have a 2GB RAM.
The rumors also suggest that there is the possibility of a 256GB variant for the premium versions of the iPhone 7. However, the rumors did not give specifics as to whether the 5.5-inch version or “pro” versions of the iPhone 7 will feature the 256GB option. The anticipated handset will be the first phone from Apple to feature a 3GB RAM arranged as four 6GB mono-die parts.
The rumors of three options for the iPhone 7 are doubtful though because the firm traditionally releases two variants meaning it will most likely not produce the rumored three versions. The Chinese research firm claims that the iPhone 7 will be available as a 4.7 inch and 5.5-inch versions. Reports also suggest that the company will most likely launch OLED displays next year or in 2018 and not this year.
