Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Launches Google Cloud Platform In Australia

Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) announced the launch of its Google Cloud Platform (GCP) in Australia on Wednesday.

The company announced the launch of the Google Cloud Platform in Australia on Wednesday, adding on to the number of locations in which the platform has been expanded. Google’s new facility in Australia, the cloud data centers created in Singapore last month as well as Tokyo in November last year are all part of the wide expansion plans that the company announced in September 2016. The numerous expansion measures are part of the software and tech giant’s move towards keeping up with rival cloud services such as Amazon Web Services owned by Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Microsoft Azure owned by Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT).

“Google is touting a 40 percent to 80 percent reduction in round trip latency for applications served out of the Sydney location, instead of Google’s other Asian locations, for Australian and New Zealand users,” ZNet pointed out.

Setting up a Google Cloud Platform in Australia a milestone for Google

The new Google Cloud Platform in Australia marks a significant milestone for Google. This is because it represents an expanded GCP footprint in the Asia Pacific region. Mumbai will be the next region to benefit from a GCP facility which is currently under construction and its launch will most likely take place before the end of the year.

Google has also undertaken significant investment in heavy submarine cable capacity as part of its expansion measures. This includes the Indigo cables between Australia and Asia as well as the FASTER cable between the United States and Japan. Five out of the seven subsea cables that the company has invested in are in Asia.

The Indigo subsea cable will span 9,000 kilometers and it will be constructed with the help of Alcatel Submarine Networks. It is expected to be completed in 2019 and Google revealed earlier this year that it the cable will connect Singapore, Jakarta, Perth, and Sidney. The new facility in the Sidney region will offer the main GCP services such as Cloud DNS, Cloud VPN, Cloud SQL, Cloud Load Balancer, Cloud Storage and Compute Engine.

Alphabet stock closed the latest trading session on Tuesday at $968.99.
