Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google Makes Dialer App Available To Non-Nexus Handsets

Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google has unlocked its dialer app which was originally only available for Nexus devices. It can now be downloaded Android phones other than the Nexus line.

Google has now unlocked the app thus removing the restrictions so that the dialer app can be enjoyed by any Android handset running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Some of the handsets that are compatible with the dialer app include the OnePlus One, Galaxy S7, LG G5, and the HTC 10 among others.

One of the best features of the dialer is the ability to search contacts and businesses directly from within the app. It is also possible to search nearby locations, block calls and send visual voicemails using the app. However, it is too early to rejoice because the company has taken back the ability to use the app on other handsets. Google told Android Police that the ability to use the app on devices other than Nexus handsets was an error. This means that Play Store no longer allows installation of the dialer app on Android phones unless they are the Nexus models.

The whole incident is a good example of Google’s determination to maintain exclusivity in its own brands even though most of the apps offered on Play Store are open source. It also allows developers to get on board the development of open-source applications. The dialer app is one of the Nexus exclusive apps out there, and it worked perfectly on other Android devices in the short time that it was unlocked.

Most developers believe that dialing apps are among the most complex applications in existence, and the firm is doing an excellent job with its maintenance. Perhaps one day it will be made available to other handset manufacturers but the speedy manner in which Google revoked the dialer app suggests that there are no plans to make it available anytime soon. In the meantime, Android users who wish to take advantage of the app should invest in a Nexus handset to gain access to the app and other exclusive features.
