A joint venture between Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google and Levi’s, which began in 2015, has finally yielded fruit. The two have unveiled their smart commuter jacket, which will feature Google’s smart textiles platform; Project Jacquard. The interactive jacket marks the first widely available product using the new technology and will enable its wearer to give instructions to their Smartphone devices.

The jacket is dark denim plus it is easy to sport many of its other features on a majority of Levi’s commuter coats. However, it has a standalone uniqueness; the small screenless fabric touch interface on the left wrist. As the name suggests the Commuter jacket, which will sell for $350 is particularly for cycling commuters.

Google’s new jacket is a step forward technologically

Wearable technology is on a tear. It is perhaps the reason why Google has also chosen to be part of the advancing IoT. The technology can be used to manage basic mobile apps.

Its touch interface has the capability of recognizing close to five gestures for example; full palming, making a circular motion, brushing in and out, and double tapping.

Ars Technica writes, “Jacquard allows wearers to control their mobile experience and connect to a variety of services, such as music or maps, directly from the jacket. This is especially useful when it might be difficult to use the smartphone.”

Google hopes to get developers enticed with the possibilities within the jacket

A lot still needs to be done on the jacket in regards to its development for it to fit in the real world. Ars Technica explains that developers have an opportunity of developing other apps or create new features for the platform.

Meanwhile, Google has expressed its optimism about the future of Jacquard. The search giant says it will constantly try to deploy the tech beyond it being a simple Smartphone companion. In the meantime, Alphabet’s stock was trading at $864.58 witnessing an increase of $3.17 or 0.37%.
