Reports from Asia indicate that Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) has no plans of releasing six-core CPUs but will instead release octa-core and quad-core processors. The reports are based on rumors emanating from the Taipei Game Show specifically from Zolkorn, a website based in Thailand.

Zolkorn claims that reliable sources have confirmed that the Ryzen processors won’t come with hex-core chips. They will however be made available in the three-tier product range namely SR7, SR5 and SR3. This has caught enthusiasts by surprise since the mid-range 6-core part from Intel, the Core i7-6850K and Core i7-6800K, are highly popular.

AMD will still take on Intel

To counter the Core i3, i5 and i7 structure from Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), AMD is likely to also offer three broad flavors. Separating the Zen-based chips out, AMD might have to turn the simultaneous multi-threading technology on and off throughout the Ryzen’s different levels. That would allow for three options including an eight-core and 16-thread set up, an eight-thread eight-core chips and quad-core designs.

It is also understood that the Ryzen CPUs will be multiplier unlocked. This will allow for clock speeds to be tweaked to extend their output. On the chipset side of the equation, the entry-level A320 boards will not support overclocking while the slightly more advanced B350 will support some form of overclocking. The X370 motherboard will support a full range of Ryzen overclocking.

Ryzen CPUs could be a better bargain

Reports also indicate that Ryzen CPUs will also come at a lower price than the ones from Intel. AMD is however yet to reveal any information concerning the rumors despite the fact that the company has previously been more than willing to discuss other features of the Zen architecture. The chip maker has also not revealed any information on the final specifications including model names, clock speeds or even pricing. However, industry watchers are convinced the products from AMD are likely to be more competitive than those from Intel.

In Monday’s trading session, shares of Advanced Micro Devices Inc edged down slightly by 0.56 percent to close the day at $10.61.
