Windstream Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:WIN) Delivers Custom Network To DISA

Windstream Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:WIN) has delivered on the contract it got from the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) to build customized network solutions. The provider of advanced network communications said the contract included fiber builds, all of which have been constructed and delivered.

Windstream said it constructed the customized networks into six military and government installations. Those installations included Sheppard Air Force Base, McGhee Tyson Airfield, Naval Air Station Albany, Defense Logistics Agency, Kellogg Air National Guard Air Field and Naval Station Great Lakes. With the projected completed, Windstream said the network solutions it has rendered will play a critical role in supporting combat missions of DISA.

“Windstream has a long history of and expertise in delivering unique, customized network solutions to our customers,” said Windstream’s VP and General Manager Bradley Kilbey.

Network upgrade

Besides large customers like the federal government modernize their communications networks, Windstream has also been upgrading its own network, especially in local metro. The company recently announced metro network upgrade in markets like Atlanta, Chicago, Minneapolis, Charlotte, Cleveland, Nashville, Richmond and Philadelphia.

More recently Windstream announced plans to upgrade its internet network in several Northeast Georgia counties, Lumpkin, Dawson, Jackson and Habersham. The plan to upgrade the broadband network in Northeast Georgia comes amid growing complaints from customers in the market.

Protest over Verizon acquisition

Windstream, whose offerings also include managed services, disaster recovery and cloud computing, recently complained about Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ)’s acquisition of XO. The company said that the deal would result in higher prices in the Ethernet market for wholesalers.

Windstream relies on networks such as those of XO for last mile connections. The company told the FCC that since Verizon and AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) are already the largest players in the market, acquiring XO would limit options for wholesalers, leading to higher prices that could make their operations uneconomical.

Windstreamn stock eased 2.60% to $6.78 in the last session. The stock is up slightly more than 5% YTD.
